Overview:
Ramaiah Institute of Technology (RIT), formerly M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), is an autonomous private engineering college located in Bangalore, Karnataka and is affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University headquartered at Belgaum, Karnataka, India.
The college was established in 1962. Since August 2007, RIT has been academically autonomous for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs. While VTU will still award the degrees, the college has academic freedom in framing its own schemes of study, curricula and student evaluation.
RIT offers undergraduate and graduate courses of study and research including Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Technology, Master of Business Administration and offers programs leading to award of PhD in various disciplines. RIT is also a research centre in 12 areas including engineering and management disciplines. RIT is the only engineering college in Bangalore that is autonomous for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
The college has academic alliances with Intel, IBM, Schneider Electric, JSW Steel Ltd, Cognizant EMC, Nokia and other multinationals. It also partnered ISRO in 2010 to build the StudSat nano satellite and RIT was chosen in 2012 to join the consortium of colleges that would assist ISRO in thepresntl StudSat-2. The college is also credited for the development of India’s first unmanned air vehicle (UAV) with an autopilot system.
History
RIT was founded in 1962 by the late M. S. Ramaiah, an educationist, philanthropist, and infrastructure visionary. RIT is part of Gokula Education Foundation (GEF) which owns and manages several educational institutions across various streams. The foundation also runs a Multi Speciality Hospital. RIT was the first college started by the Gokula Education Foundation.
RIT is in the 56th year of existence and is one of the oldest engineering colleges in south India. Only 5 other engineering institutions have achieved this mark in Karnataka-UVCE, BMSCE in Bangalore, BVB College of Engineering & Technology in Hubli Malnad College of Engineering in Hassan and Siddaganga institute of technology(Tumkur). MSRIT is separate from this University of Applied Sciences which is a new private university created by the same management.

THE BEGINNING
Started in 1962, MSRIT was started in 1962 by Late Dr. M S Ramaiah, our Founder Chairman who was a renowned visionary, philanthropist, and a pioneer in creating several landmark infrastructure projects in India.

EARLY PERIOD (1962 – 1972)
From 1962 – 1972, MSRIT was founded by the great Philanthropist, Visionary, Industrialist and Educationist Dr. M.S. Ramaiah on 4th August 1962 offering Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering branches under the leadership of Prof. C.R. Ramachandran who was the first Principal. Prof. Y. A. Prahalada Rao took over the responsibility of the HOD of Mechanical Engineering in the year 1963 and continued till 1977 as the Head. He became the Principal in 1971 and led the college commendably with the help of a dedicated team of faculty. DECADE OF GROWTH
The journey of success continued with the addition of Electronics & Communication Engineering department in 1975. The department made a difference by acquiring top ranks at the University level and majority of the students had gone abroad for higher studies and many reached responsible positions in multinational companies. In view of the Industrialization of Indian Economy, MSRIT started on time the Industrial and Production Engineering branch in the year 1979. With the addition of Metrology Laboratory in 1982 and Industrial Engineering Laboratory in 1983, the college of Engineers (India) recognized the Industrial and Production Engineering course offered by the college in 1989. DECADE OF CONSOLIDATION
M.Tech in Structural Engineering was started in the Civil department in the year 1983. Computerization of the world led to starting new branches like Computer Science and Engineering in the year 1984.

DECADE OF EXPANSION
With the objective of imparting contemporary technologies in the field of Telecommunication Engineering, MSRIT started Department of Telecommunication Engineering in the year 1997 affiliated to Bangalore University. With the advancement in technologies and challenges faced in health care sector, MSRIT with an intention of creating skilled manpower and to explore the plethora of opportunities started the Department of Medical Electronics in 1996.
With the objective of creating high quality professionals to meet the global challenges in the field of Computer Applications, Department of Master of Computer Applications was established in 1997.
To enhance management skills MSRIT started Department of Management Studies (MBA) in the year 1998 which is growing from strength to strength day by day and within a short time the department has carved a niche amongst the comity of colleges offering MBA degree.
DECADE OF EXCELLENCE

The year 2004 witnessed starting of three M.Tech programs namely Computer Applications in Industrial drives, Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Digital Communications. ISO 9001 Certification was conferred on MSRIT in the year 2000 and re certifications were obtained in the years 2003, 2007 and 2010.
MSRIT voluntarily submitted applications to the NBA for the accreditation of several of its major UG programs. After assessment, in February 2001, NBA accorded accreditation to all the major departments of the college for their UG programs. Since then the college has been consistently participating in the accreditation process.
MSRIT participated in and successfully completed Phase I of TEQIP, Technical Education Quality Improvement program, an initiative of the Government of India with funding from World Bank. MSRIT has been selected to participate in Phase II of TEQIP also under sub – component 1.2 with focus on PG Education and Research.
Visvesvaraya Technological University granted Autonomous Status to MSRIT, for both UG and PG Programmes, in the year 2007 and the same was approved by UGC also.
AUTONOMY JOURNEY
We are very happy to record that Visvesvaraya Technological University and UGC have granted the college academic autonomy for all its Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs starting from the academic year 2007 – 2008.
