What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is a diverse subject that derives its breadth from the need to design and manufacture everything from small individual parts and devices to large systems. The role of a mechanical engineer is to take a product from an idea to the marketplace. The mechanical engineer needs to acquire particular skills and knowledge. He/she needs to understand the forces and the thermal environment that a product, its parts, or its subsystems will encounter; to design them for functionality, aesthetics, and the ability to withstand the forces and the thermal environment they will be subjected to; and to determine the best way to manufacture them and ensure they will operate without failure.

Direct Mechanical Engineering Admission in BMS College

To put it simply, mechanical engineering deals with anything that moves, including the human body, a very complex machine. Mechanical engineers learn about materials, solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, control, instrumentation, design, and manufacturing to understand mechanical systems. Specialized mechanical engineering subjects include biomechanics, cartilage-tissue engineering, energy conversion, laser-assisted materials processing, combustion, MEMS, microfluidic devices, fracture mechanics, nanomechanics, mechanisms, micropower generation, tribology (friction and wear), and vibrations.

According to Wikipedia; Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines.

The mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided design, and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others.

Mechanical Engineering Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering started in 1962 with an intake of 60 students. The department of mechanical engineering in MS Ramaiah Bangalore has grown strong over the last 54 years with the intake rising to 180 students educated by a teaching staff comprising 50 members.

Earlier the department was affiliated to Bangalore University for a period of 35 years starting from the year 1962 and then the affiliation changed to the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in the year 1997. The department was awarded the autonomous status by the VTU in the year 2007.

A Master’s degree course in Manufacturing Science and Engineering was introduced in the year 1985 to create adequate opportunities for scholars with a desire to pursue a career in research and education. Acknowledging the requirements of automation in Production Industries, the department introduced one more Master’s degree course with the title Computer Integrated Manufacturing in the year 2004. The Department also offers a research program that includes M.Sc. Engineering by research and Ph.D. degree from VTU and at present 24 researchers are pursuing a Ph.D.

Mechanical Engineering – MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology

Mechanical Engineering Department in MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology Bangalore was started in the year 1962 by the late Dr. M. S. Ramaiah who was a renowned visionary, philanthropist and a pioneer in creating several landmark infrastructure projects in India. Today, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology stands tall as one of India’s finest names in Engineering Education and has produced around 35,000 engineering professionals who occupy responsible positions across the globe.

The department of Mechanical Engineering in MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT) is a team of well qualified fifty teaching staff members. All the staff members have post-graduate degrees and eighteen (18) of the staff members are doctorates.

The staff members of the Mechanical Engineering department of the institute have taken up a number of research projects funded by many external agencies like DRDO, DST, AICTE, and VTU and have received funding to the tune of Rs. 1 Crore.

Faculty members from the department have published books in different domains of Mechanical Engineering and these books are recommended by the Visvesvaraya Technological University’s Board of Studies as reference textbooks. The department has also contributed to developing intellectual property for the institute by obtaining a patent and currently is in pursuit of three patents.

The department received software grants from Autodesk, a leading Computer Aided Design multinational company, and has been using them in the curriculum. In view of the golden jubilee celebrations, the department conducted a national level project exhibition and an International Conference on “Challenges and Opportunities in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management Studies” – ICCOMIM.
