About Vellore Institute, Vellore
Vellore Institute of Technology (V.I.T), formerly Vellore Engineering institute is a private deemed university institute located in the outskirts of Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1984, as V.I.T by G. Viswanathan, the institution offers 20 undergraduate, 34 postgraduate, four integrated and four research programs.
It has campuses in Vellore, Chennai, Bhopal and Amravati. V.I.T was established with the aim of providing quality higher education on par with international standards. With the wide array of services V.I.T provides; everything is efficiently managed by the University’s Academic and research centres. Ranging from centres responsible for conducting exams, helping students take foreign admission exams, numerous research facilities, social awareness creation centres to much more, these centres take a centre stage in creating awareness amongst students on the various things that are achievable in their college life.
V.I.T admits students through its own engg entrance exam, called the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE). It is conducted every year in the month of April and May. The exam has been conducted online since 2013 and in 2018 212,000 students have registered. Admissions for non engg undergraduate programmes are granted on the basis of the applicants’ 12th standard board exam results. It is mandatory for every student to have studied mathematics as a regular subject to be considered for admission.
V.I.T offers academic programs in engg, Technology, Applied Sciences, and Management. It offers 20 undergraduate programs, 34 postgraduate, four integrated MS courses, and four doctoral programs. V.I.T consolidated its disciplines into 10 Schools of Study with the addition of the V.I.T Law School at its Chennai campus.
Research centers are part of the schools to encourage collaboration between the research and coursework areas and provide an opportunity for coursework students to participate in research projects. V.I.T is among the first in India to implement the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) which gives the students flexibility to make their own time tables by choosing the subjects and the faculties under whose guidance they want to study.
In the academic year 2017-2018, V.I.T achieved an average placement of Rs. 6.5 Lakhs. Major Companies like Microsoft, Deloitte, TCS Digital and Bank of America were the top recruiters for this season.

There are two main institute fests that are conducted in V.I.T. The Fall semester hosts the technical fests in each of the established campuses around the month of August/September. The Vellore campus organizes GRAVITAS, while the Chennai counterpart organizes TechnoVIT. Meanwhile the Spring semesters is reserved for the cultural fest of Riviera and VIBRANCE, which are mainly sports and cultural fests. According to organizers for Riviera 2011, it pulled more than 300 participants from over 20 colleges and universities. Rivera 2013 saw popular names like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Sukhwinder Singh, Chiyaan Vikram, Siddarth, singer Kartik and many more. ParaMek Technologies from New Delhi conducted a workshop on Automotive engg during the fest which was attended by more than 450 students.
Campus at V.I.T
V.I.T has two campuses. Two former campuses of the university, in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh and Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh are now autonomous private universities, V.I.T-AP University and V.I.T Bhopal University, respectively.
V.I.T’s main campus is on 250 acres of land. It is divided by the Chennai–Bangalore railway line. The academic portion of the campus and the women’s hostels are to the south of the railway tracks while the northern portion houses the men’s hostels and the outdoor stadium. The parts are connected by three subways.
The campus resembles a city, with lake, gardens, lawns, residential complexes, food courts, hair salons and wide roads. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply along with shopping complexes to cater to the needs of residents. V.I.T is in the city of Vellore in India’s southern state, Tamil Nadu, between Chennai and Bangalore. It is 130 km west of Chennai and 180 km east of Bangalore.
