What is Telecommunication Engineering?

Telecommunication Engineering is focused on the devices and mediums used to transmit communications information in the form of words, sounds, or images over great distances. The main mediums a Telecommunication Engineers develops systems and solutions within are telephones, radio, television, and the internet.

Project planning, supervising and organizing and overseeing the installation of these devices are tasks that Telecommunication Engineers may perform as part of their daily duties.

One of the most important skills that any good Telecommunication Engineer must have is in both digital and analog signal conditioning and processing.

This is because all telecommunications are eventually (if not already) converted into electrical signals which can be modified, improved and enhanced.

According to Wikipedia; Telecommunication Engineering is an engineering discipline centered on electrical and computer engineering which seeks to support and enhance telecommunication systems. The work ranges from basic circuit design to strategic mass developments.

A telecommunication engineer is responsible for designing and overseeing the installation of telecommunications equipment and facilities, such as complex electronic switching systems, copper wire telephone facilities, optical fiber cabling, IP data systems, and terrestrial radio link systems. Telecommunication engineering also overlaps heavily with broadcast engineering.

Scope after Telecommunication Engineering

A Telecommunication Engineering graduate can specialize in any one of the following areas: GPS, internet, mobile networks and radio transmission.

Telecommunication is a research area that is technically challenging and offers well paid contracts to those who excel at it. Telecommunication companies always seek out the services of engineers to develop their network base.

The job opportunities for Telecom engineers are increasing rapidly day by day because of the boom in the industry. Telephone Industry, microwave radio systems, computer industry, cellular phone industry, satellite communications etc are some of the fields which provide ample job opportunities to the telecom engineers in this area.

They could join this industry as test engineers, engineers, software engineers, customer support staff, product managers, power distributors, installers, power reactor operator, design development, quality assurance, servicing, sales and marketing, research development and many more.

They can also find other job options in information and broadcasting sectors, aerospace industry, mobile phone service providers, railways or police wireless organizations, cable and satellite networks.

Telecom companies such as Nokia, Siemens, Tata Indicom, Airtel, Vodafone, BSNL, Reliance etc are hiring graduates with excellent talent in designing, installing and troubleshooting telecom networks.

Companies usually prefer individuals with hands-on experience and practical knowledge of telecom operations. If not a job, an internship can also be a good start to a career in telecommunications.
