What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial Engineering (IE), often also called Industrial Engineering & Management (IEM) provides students knowledge about the design, planning and optimization of production and manufacturing processes. It integrates methods and techniques from engineering as well as management science.

As per Wikipedia; Industrial Engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with the optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations. Industrial engineers work to eliminate waste of time, money, materials, man-hours, machine time, energy, and other resources that do not generate value.

Industrial Engineering in BMS College of Engineering

The Department of Industrial Engineering at BMS College of Engineering was started 35 years back with an intake of 60 candidates at the undergraduate level. The department also offers a postgraduate program in Product Design and Manufacturing (PDM) in affiliation with VTU Belgaum on a part-time basis.

The Department is a research center under VTU leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. IEM provides a driving force on productivity, Management Engineering, and Software related curriculum.

The department houses suitable labs for the students to give them a competitive edge and enable them to fit in as the key link between technical personnel and management in any organization and thus contribute to the organizations’ growth and development.

The Department has qualified faculties; all of them possess a PG degree and four of them have doctorates degree in various Industrial Engineering streams as well. The students joining this department will be trained to perform in Engineering Management, Production, and Software-based Industry practices.

Scope after Industrial Engineering and Management

Industrial engineering (IE) is the most wide-ranging engineering discipline in terms of career options. While other traditional engineering majors tend to focus on specific applications of skill sets, and industrial engineering education offers you the flexibility to build your career in the industry of your choice.

Because industrial engineers focus on bridging the gap between management and operations in a cross-section of organizations and professional fields, they often begin their careers with varying job titles.

Production engineer, quality engineer, management engineer, product manager, and process engineer are common entry-level or early management jobs for our graduates in manufacturing, health care, and other related engineering fields.

Industrial engineers focus on how to get the work done most efficiently, balancing many factors, such as time, a number of workers needed, available technology, actions workers need to take, achieving the end product with no errors, workers’ safety, environmental concerns, and cost.

What Industrial Engineers do?

Industrial Engineers typically do the following:

  • Review production schedules, engineering specifications, process flows, and other information to understand methods that are applied and activities that take place in manufacturing and services
  • Figure out how to manufacture parts or products, or deliver services, with maximum efficiency
  • Develop management control systems to make financial planning and cost analysis more efficient
  • Enact quality control procedures to resolve production problems or minimize costs
  • Design control systems to coordinate activities and production planning in order to ensure that products meet quality standards
  • Confer with clients about product specifications, vendors about purchases, management personnel about manufacturing capabilities, and staff about the status of projects

To find ways to reduce waste and improve performance, industrial engineers study product requirements carefully. Then they use mathematical methods and models to design manufacturing and information systems to meet those requirements most efficiently.

Their versatility allows industrial engineers to engage in activities that are useful to a variety of businesses, governments, and nonprofits.

For example, industrial engineers engage in supply chain management to help businesses minimize inventory costs, conduct quality assurance activities to help businesses keep their customer bases satisfied, and work in the growing field of project management as industries across the economy seek to control costs and maximize efficiencies.

All manufacturing and engineering companies offer jobs to Industrial engineers. TATA (all sectors, Motors, Steel, Communications…etc), Reliance Industries ltd., Maruti Udyog, and thousands of other companies in India including TCS, Infosys, Wipro Including Government originations like Railway, BSNL, ONGC, ISRO and DRDO to name few.
